On the bench it is common to train between 6 and 10 reps and never know your max. This example takes a set of 80 kg for 8 reps, an intermediate level for many people with a couple of years of lifting, and turns it into an estimated 1RM.
At 8 reps the formulas start to drift a bit more than at 5, which is why Epley and Brzycki are both shown. If you go for a real max, have a spotter and climb in small jumps from 90%.
How this was calculated
Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps / 30). It is an estimate, reliable up to about 10 reps taken close to failure. Brzycki (weight × 36 / (37 − reps)) is shown for contrast: if the two drift apart, the set had more reps than the formula handles well.
