How to choose your HYROX gear
HYROX is eight kilometers of running broken up by eight stations: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls. At home you won't replicate a sled or a rower, but you can train the patterns that wear you down most: squat-to-throw, loaded lunges and sustained effort at a high heart rate.
Start with your weak spot. If Wall Balls wreck you, you need a ball. If your legs fall apart during Sandbag Lunges, you need awkward, shifting load. If you're strong but slow on the run, put your money into a watch and a chest strap so you can control your zones.
What actually matters (and what doesn't)
What counts is being able to repeat the session often, not owning the most expensive accessory.
- Slam ball or throwing ball: pick one that doesn't bounce wildly, at a weight close to your division's.
- Sandbag: sturdy seams, usable handles and adjustable filler. A bag that splits by the third session is useless.
- Kettlebell: grip and finish matter more than the brand; neoprene or vinyl protects your floor.
- Heart rate: a chest strap is more reliable than a wrist sensor in intervals; the watch adds pace and GPS.
- You don't need a homemade sled or trendy gadgets: more well-executed sets beat another accessory.
Which option fits you
On a tight budget, a slam ball and a jump rope are the best entry point: they train power, coordination and cardio for very little. Add a sandbag when you want to practice Sandbag Lunges with real load.
In the mid-range, a kettlebell, a weighted vest and a chest strap make sense. The vest loads lunges and running, but ease into it so you don't overload your knees and ankles.
Premium items, like the Garmin watch or the exercise bike, are for people who already train consistently and want to track load or add low-impact cardio volume. If you're just starting, they aren't a priority.
Among supplements, creatine monohydrate has the strongest backing for explosive efforts, while electrolytes only pay off in long sessions or in the heat.
Usage and safety tips
Increase load gradually and don't stack heavy vest or sandbag days back to back. If you take creatine, 3-5 g a day is enough with no loading phase; if you have a medical condition, check with a professional first.
Frequently asked questions
What weight slam ball or Wall Ball should I train with for HYROX?+
Ideally train with the weight of your division, and start lighter if you struggle so you can clean up your technique. A slam ball works for power and conditioning, but it doesn't fully replace a bouncing Wall Ball. If you compete, do at least some sessions with the real weight and target height.
Do I need a weighted vest for HYROX?+
It isn't essential. It helps load lunges, running and bodyweight work once more reps no longer make you progress. Start light and increase slowly.
Chest strap or watch for tracking heart rate?+
A chest strap is more accurate, especially in intervals and uneven efforts. A watch gives you pace, distance and comfort, and many models pair with a strap. If you can buy only one and you train by zones, start with the strap.
Are electrolytes and creatine worth it?+
Creatine monohydrate is well supported for strength and short, intense efforts. Electrolytes only help in long sessions or heavy heat; in normal workouts, water and a balanced diet are usually enough.
